Hi guys,
I've just had my front DW head ripped by some loser and need a new one. Just a couple of things...
1. The new DW heads in stores all come with 'air vents'. These are six holes about 1cm round placed all around the edge of the head. It's horrible, you can see blankets and pillows through the front of the kick...
2. Please tell me I'm wrong, but do they not do a PS3-type display with a muffle ring built in the head?
HOW ANNOYING!!!

Unfortunately, an unported head, or one with heads around the perimeter, makes it difficult to mike the drum externally. You could use whatever head you like, and either go without a logo or use a DW sticker, if you want it.

Why don't you just use a regular Remo head? I also play DW, but since I payed a lot of money I don't get why I should make advertisment for DW on my drumset. You can see on the lugs that I play DW, I don't need a stupid Logo in the middle of my bassdrum head. Now, if I would endorse DW , of course, but I pay, so they have to pay me to advertise their product. :-)

Oddtime's right, they should pay you to advertise! DW kits are nicely recogniseable from the lugs, so I say go for an unbranded Remo Ebony Powestroke III for a nice stealth look.

You could get a Remo PS3 and order a DW decal from DW through their website. I believe they go for about $6-7.00. Sometimes you will see them float through ebay. Good Luck

Hmm, I actually like this type of head myself. Never had a problem with 'seeing' anything thru the holes, the DW pillow is black and sits really low inside so to not see it thru the holes unless you were to get right up to the drum and peer thru.
as to the P3 type head, no they don't unless you get the Pacific logo head which has the ring inside.

Thanks for the swift reply RW,
Hmmm, I usually port the head anyway, so the holes on the outside are a little overkill, and asthetically, I feel they break up the look of the head too much.
Any idea why they'd make a PS3 version of the Pacific head, but not of the top line DW one???

John Good has his own views on venting and rings.......i don't port my front heads anymore, I love the stock logo head and i have 3 DW kits with the May miking system inside.
Wish I had a better answer to the 'whys' on putting a ring.
Actually, i was wrong about the Pacific logo head, i just looked at one and it does NOT have a ring either.
Aquarian was the original OEM for ALL of DW's drumheads, then the company made the switch to remo for what ever reason.

Get a white coated head and have someone paint a nice tropical scene on it for a '40s retro look.
